This Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to hold a markup of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a multilateral agreement which broadly addresses the rights of the disabled in a variety of economic, social, and political contexts (a brief primer of the Convention can be found in an earlier Sidebar). Many supporters and some opponents of ratification characterize existing U.S. laws as largely complying with Convention requirements (indeed, much of the debate regarding ratification centers on whether it would meaningfully benefit U.S. persons and advance U.S. interests abroad). However, some opponents to U.S. adoption of the Convention disagree with this characterization, and argue that ratification could have profound effects on U.S. domestic law and policy.
