For over six decades, the United States has played a leading role in global efforts to alleviate hunger and malnutrition and to enhance world food security through international food aid. Most U.S. food aid is through either the sale on concessional terms or the donation of agricultural commodities. Food aid, valued at about $2 billion annually since 2002, accounts for 6% of traditional U.S. foreign assistance each year, with economic and military assistance accounting for most outlays.
