Ansar al Sharia in Tunisia (AAS-T) was founded in 2011, after the popular uprising that overthrew Tunisia’s authoritarian regime. AAS-T initially operated openly in Tunisia and appeared to focus on preaching and social works, while also reportedly facilitating flows of Tunisian combatants to Syria. Since 2012, the group has been implicated in several attacks in Tunisia. In 2013, the Tunisian government declared AAS-T illegal and it was subsequently designated for U.N. and U.S. terrorism sanctions. Its leaders have since gone underground. AAS-T shares a name with other groups in the Middle East and North Africa, but the links among them are uncertain.
