The Protecting Americans From Tax Hikes Act of 2015 (commonly referred to as the tax extenders package) includes several provisions affecting tax-exempt Section 501(c)(4) organizations. Most 501(c)(4) entities are social welfare organizations, which must be ?primarily engaged in promoting in some way the common good and general welfare of the people of the community.? Section 501(c)(4) organizations have received attention in recent years, in part due to concerns that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mishandled some groups? applications for 501(c)(4) status. It appears some of the act?s provisions are intended to address issues related to these concerns.
